The opening scene
At noon, the sky-market loses the sound of footsteps.
Boots still strike jade bridges. Porters still run beneath silk awnings. Nothing lands with weight. Cups drift a finger's width above tables, and every chain holding the High Meridian Exchange curves upward as if the valley has begun falling away.
Far below, a line of houses sinks into the earth. Roofs fold. A dry well disappears without spilling a stone. People flee across ground that deepens under each footstep, their bodies carrying weight borrowed by ships already climbing through the clouds.
